After the liberation of Vietnam, since there was only one bridge to meet the transportation demand of people, Da Nang residents felt the need to have another one connecting the downtown area with the neighboring areas.  Knowing this concern, the government decided to build Han River Bridge. The construction process started in February 1998. Later, in 2000, Han River Bridge was officially inaugurated. This event marked the development of Da Nang as Han River Bridge is the first swing bridge in Vietnam. More remarkably, it was designed by Vietnamese architects and constructed with the help of local people. The bridge is 487.7 meters in length, 12.9 meters in width. It contains 11 spans, 33 meters long each span. Over time, Da Nang continues to show its rapid growth, and tourism plays a significant part in that growth. Visiting Han River Bridge when traveling to Da Nang gradually becomes a must for tourists.  So, what exactly Han River Bridge has that attracts that many people? Find out in the next part of this article.

Han River Bridge is a complex work of modern technologies and highly efficient construction engineering. It is even named as a “Work of typical quality” during the period from 2001 to 2005.

One interesting thing about Han River Bridge that tourists would like to witness is the rotation of it at midnight. Specifically, at 1 am every day, the center of the bridge will rotate 90 degrees around its axis and remain along the river flow for the next 2.5 hours until about 3.30 am when it eventually returns to the initial position. On the weekend, however, 11 pm to 12 pm is when the bridge rotates. The time is adjusted to create favorable conditions for travelers to arrange their time. The purpose of this rotating activity is to prepare a clear way for large ships to pass through. Therefore, vehicles will not be able to cross Han River Bridge in this period. Undoubtedly, this movement is what tourists have always been curious about. As the bridge is moving, you can somehow feel that Da Nang is also changing to become a more youthful and civilized city.

Along with the rotation, the sparkling of Han River Bridge under city lights at night is also what draws people’s attention. By “people”, we mean not only first-time tourists but also Da Nang residents.  When the city lights up, Han River Bridge reflects its swings and the street lights on the water surface of Han River, creating a shimmering sight with dazzling colors that hooks everyone into it.  Besides, discovering the local life around the bridge is also a great idea. Since you are traveling, take your time to visit Han market, which is just a 5-minute walk from Han River Bridge, before coming for the bridge.  Imagine wandering around, immersing in the dreamlike atmosphere, and enjoying the starry night sight, truly an unforgettable experience!

You can use car, motorbike, bike, or taxi; anything is okay. If you start from Hoi An, especially from the traffic light at An Bang Beach, turn left and keep going until you find Pham Van Dong Street on the left of you. From there, take that street, and you will arrive at Han River Bridge after 45 minutes.  Or, if you prefer to walk from Han Market, take Bach Dang Street. When you meet Indovina Bank, turn left, then turn right to Le Duan Street, and turn right again to reach Han River Bridge. Walking takes about 10-15 minutes.

There are many options for you to witness the splendid beauty of the rotating bridge. Taking a cruise along the river is the number one choice if you want to have a unique view.  Other than that, high-rise buildings are also perfect places. Choose yourself a place like a hotel, a plaza, or a high building located on the side of the Han River which offers a stunning view.  Besides those multistory buildings, you can choose some public areas like the square, park or any nearby cafe to enjoy the sight.
