Every year, approximately 1/3 of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted. This year, Accor Group focuses on food waste with a theme named Love Food Not Waste aiming to reduce food waste by 30% by the end of 2020.
At Pullman Danang Beach Resort, we believe Planet21 is not only an environmental program but also an exertion for us to take on our responsibility to the city and our planet. Following this campaign, some of our initiatives are carried out for both of our guests and employees such as putting in-room leaflets and a standee on every table in our Restaurant Epice to increase customer awareness of food waste and encourage them to clear their dishes while having meals. We did the same actions to our employees in the canteen by using standees and “Love Food Not Waste” hanging strings to attract employees’ attention.
In order to see the effect of this campaign, our hotel weighed the food waste including the food left during breakfast, lunch and dinner time from both Restaurant Epice and our canteen. The result firstly came out with 246 kg food waste in total. After 1 day, we reweighed and saw a reduction in the total food weight from 246 kg to 209 kg.
The result after our first implementation day is quite impressive with a 15% decline. This is a positive signal showing the awareness of food waste reduction is increased through several actions of our hotel. If we – all Accor hotels – keep working on this campaign, we will reach the goal by the end of 2020.
